5 Ways Our Body Reacts to Breakups

It’s not easy to say end your relationship with someone. Often, after a breakup, people may experience rage and stress. This could extend to cause some physical symptoms as well.
Here are five main ways in which a breakup can affect us physically, especially after ending relationships that were once fueled with intimacy and good memories.

1. Anxiety and sleep problems

It’s only natural for us humans to hate cutting bonds with others. We are social animals by nature, and a sudden breakup could be directly reflected in our sleeping patterns, causing insomnia due to severe anxiety. A load of research has been conducted on the subject, and many studies show that when we break up with someone we love dearly, parts of our brains are activated… the same parts are also activated by addiction to drugs such as cocaine.

2. Chest pain

Although many people may assume that a breakup would only cause emotional pain, research has indicated that this pain can manifest physically in our bodies. This emotional pain can easily turn into “heartache” very similar to feeling out of breath or feeling pain in the chest area. Add to that, many people who suffer heart problems are more prone to developing nasty heart diseases right after a breakup, including having a heart attack! It’s true, cutting ties with a loved one can really break our hearts.

3. Skin problems

Not only do we take less care of our outer appearance after a painful experience, but our bodies also start releasing hormones that cause stress and anxiety. This easily shows on a person’s face and skin in the form of pimples, tired features, and stress-related hair loss from the head.

4. Muscle pain

Some people may call it bad luck if you fall and break a leg only a few days after a breakup. But the truth is, people are at higher risk of losing balance and hurting themselves right after an emotionally draining event. We not only lose balance because we are more careless after a breakup, but because we’re suffering from muscle pain and spasms in random areas without being actually sick.

5. Loss of appetite or weight gain

Excessive eating and complete loss of appetite could both be signs of a nasty breakup. This is because traumatizing emotional events make our body more prone to weight gain as our cells are no longer as sensitive to insulin. This prompts our brains to respond by secreting more and more, causing weight gain to appear more clearly months after a breakup. Not only that, but people after a breakup are less likely to work out and may even skip a month’s worth of gym subscription. And the butterflies that once filled your stomach? These turn into actual tummy ache and digestive problems that could develop into something worse if not resolved.

This sounds like a lot to take in, but not all is lost! A positive outlook can help you turn a negative event into a new beginning. We advise that people begin replacing their old relationship habits with something new, like meditation or sport. These are sure to help blow some steam off and counter stress.
